This small funky little old school take away store gives off such a cool vibe with its graffitied brick wall along the side of the shop. Laden with large images of a burger with fries and thick font reading Tuck Shop, you know that you’ll be in for a back to school treat once inside. The Tuck Shop Take Away store is located just at the corner of Hawthorn Rd and Glen Eira Rd in Caulfield North. Serving a range of good old fashioned beef (and vegetarian) burgers, jaffles, milkshakes, spiders and home made sodas. This little shop almost takes you on a little trip back to the past.
You can either choose to eat at the counter or by the tables in the corner. The Tuck Shop seats 12-18 people roughly so it can get very tight and if you’re not in early enough, take away is probably a better idea.
These looked delicious. I was so tempted to try them.
Raspberry Soda and Salted caramel milkshake
Vegie Wedgie (beetroot, lentil and brown rice patty), lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, American cheese and tuckshop sauce
Minor beef burger (100% beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, American cheese and tuckshop sauce)
A classic serving of a minor cut beef burger and a whole heap of homemade french fries served to you on a plastic canteen tray just like at school back in the ol’ days. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Would you like a basket of fries with that?
Red Skin tart
Red skin and chocolate brownie
Pulled pork jaffle
Considering the amount of food I knew my friends were about to order, I opted to go for a healthier burger to lighten things up a bit. I ordered the vegie wedgie, which is made of a delicious beetroot, lentil and brown rice. The bun was so soft and everything about the burger just melted away, I ended up eating with a fork and knife. The chips were also delicious, not extra crispy, but soft crispy (which is actually how I prefer it) with the skin still on. I tried some of the red skin tart which was too sweet to my liking. It tasted like a redskin custard icing mix, which wasn’t what I had expected. The redskin chocolate brownie was extremely rich but oh so delicious and gooey inside. The pulled pork jaffle was looked really good but was actually a little bit of a let down.
Overall my experience at the Tuck Shop Take Away was a positive one. Its definitely a place to check out if you want some of that old school canteen vibe.
