I have been studying at this campus for one and a half years now and I’m a bit sad to say that I haven’t given much of the local restaurants here a fair go. Derby Thai is a sound go to place for some tasty but not necessarily authentic Thai food that is convenient and affordable for university students and decent food for value hunters like myself. The food they provide is simple, (no fancy ingredients and strange fusion flavours here) and there are always lunch specials available for you to choose from.
Derby Thai Special: Pad Kee Mao – Spicy stir fry mixed vegetables with sweet basil and lime leaves, fresh chilli on rice, vegetarian version (tofu) $8.50
Rice was a tad dry which is to be expected in a sense but the stir fry itself was really nice. The sauce was full of flavour. It was perfect way to warm up on a cold autumn day and my lips were on fire from the chilli.
Seafood Pad Thai $13.00
Derby Thai were generous with their prawns (provided 5 pieces as opposed to the standard 2) in this seafood pad thai dish. It was overall slightly too sweet, but a squeeze of lemon helped balance that sweetness out. Portion size was decent and filling. A good choice to order.
Look, come here if you are looking for something close to uni that’s not to pricey and tasty at the same time, but be prepared to wait for some seats if you plan to dine in. It gets very busy during lunch times.
