There’s just no better time to open up a gelato store than during the summer when things are just starting to heat up. Let me introduce you to a new kid on the nitrogen gelato block. Meet Dex2rose (pronounced as “dextrose”), a sweet little hangout hidden away just off of Little Bourke St. After making its debut opening in December just last year, the place has slowly been garnering its own small army of loyal customers. Is it just another nitrogen gelato lab? I’ll let you decide.
Since the entrance to the store is not actually facing Little Bourke St, to access the gelateria, you would need to enter via the Racing Club Lane. There are signs on the food path to direct you in the right direction.
There are outdoor seats made from crates for you to sit on, but due to safety reasons are only brought out outside of business trading hours.
I was fortunate to be invited by the Dex2rose team to take part in a tasting session with head chef and owner Jesse, who admittedly does not have much of a sweet tooth. The young and friendly business owner aims to market Dex2rose through its relationship with potential customers, encouraging the public to suggest flavours and a vision to involve more community participation as the word spreads around town about this new cool place to hang out and chill.
Designed as an alternative to beer, bars and pubs Jesse opened up Dex2rose as a spacious place for those who don’t drink to catch up and spend a quiet night with friends who are looking for something sweet.
The gelateria offers it’s patrons the option of two different serving sizes to choose from. There’s the small serving size with prices ranging from $4.95-$5.95 and the regular size at $5.95-$6.95 making it easier for people to not be overloaded by the standard sized serving. My favourite part about Dex2rose is that they offer vegan gelato as well. Everybody wins.
What if you’re not a fan of sweets? Well there’s always a cup of cold brew coffee to soothe the soul and keep you mellow. Or, if you are more interested in something a little different, there’s house made nitro brew coffee with apple and cinnamon to give your palate a bit of a coffee flavoured spice kick.
Sage, burnt butter & caramel
Like the name of the gelato, this flavour combination will take you back to that gnocchi or creamy pasta dish you had last week (or the week before). It’s sweet, buttery but somehow still manages to give you a slight savoury hit.
Rockmelon and Hokkaido milk tea powder served with raspberry cream
If you like you’re bubble milk tea flavours, then this Rockkaido gelato comes pretty close. It’s quite sweet but the tartness of the raspberry cream balances the flavours out.
Watermelon iced tea sorbet, lime, mint leaves
A very refreshing flavour, perfect on a hot summers day. The rosemary cream has a light subtle flavour to it, like a watermelon punch but in gelato form.
To keep things exciting at Dex2rose, all the flavours get completely changed out every 2-3weeks. So get in there now if you want to check out these unique flavours before they are completely gone. But fear not, even if you do miss out on their current flavours be rest assured that one day, popular favourites will be cycled back into the store, but for now take the plunge and give your taste buds a little adventure flavoured with surprises.
