A few weeks ago, I was invited by Yonathan to dine as a guest at their new Bagelicious store in Hawthorn. Bagelicious provides a bagel alternative to your otherwise ordinary sandwiches. The cafe offers a range of different bagels to base your sandwich in. You may choose from plain, seeded, onion, spinach and parmesan, cheese, wholemeal, rye, sour dough, chia bagels. There are even a couple of sweeter varieties if you have a bit of sweet tooth.

Despite being opened for only a few months now, the cafe has already gathered a busy number of keen locals and students looking for an alternative lunch experience from your usual brunch options.

Spinach, mushroom & swiss cheese omelette

Since I came during lunch, I decided to go for something a little more substantial and filling. I ended up choose the spinach and mushroom omelette on an onion bagel. The bagel was thick, dense and soft but chewy at the same time. I liked how they served, wrapped in a way that was easy to hold onto while eating. I’ll have to put it out there that I’m not a major fan of bagels, but this was good.

┬áTo accompany my smoothie this sunny afternoon, I decided to also order a smoothie and opted to try the acai one. It was nice and thick and refreshingly sweet. I also tried a bit of the cinnamon and raisin bagel afterwards for ‘dessert’, but at this point I was too stuffed to eat anymore.

Apart from bagels, Bagelicious also serves a salad and soup of the day (an amazing smell was wafting from the kitchen), a small variety of baked pastry goods and coffee as well. Bagelicious also servesfreshly baked bagels every few hours so that afternooners won’t feel like they’ve missed out on being served freshly baked bread out of the oven. Now that is a major bonus. Nobody really wants bread to have in the afternoon, that has been baked at 6am when they could have bread that was baked at 1pm instead.

Despite the fact that it was a pain to drive up due to the local traffic on the tram lined street, the store is very well positioned near Glenferrie train station in a busy area amongst other cafes and eateries. Service is friendly and there’s an easy going atmosphere about the place despite the busy rush during lunch. For those studying at Swinburne University, Bagelicious does great student lunch deals and is a great place to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee.
