If the last week can be of any indication of hot you can expect it to be in Melbourne this summer then I say, bring it on! After our first little Hawker Hall dining adventure, we went to check out a new ice cream pop up store that just opened on High St. For people who have never seen or heard about the concept of rolled ice cream before, the novelty of having your ice creamed made to roll up in front of you can be pretty cool.
But for those, who, like myself know that the concept of rolling cream on a chilled metal plate comes from Thailand. It can still be quite entertaining to watch our skilled scrollers do their thing right before your eyes.
Originally from Thailand, scrolled up ice cream is a common sweet street treat served up in a variety of different flavours. The best part of it all is that it comes with range of toppings as well. For $9.00 a small cup a serve or $8 if you like their Facebook page or share a picture on Instagram, I can why it can be quite popular. Check out my Instagram page if you want to see a little short recording of how they roll it up.
Come dinner time when people are out and about, the place gets really busy with people lining up outside the pop up ice cream joint. There’s only so many ice creams you can scroll up in such a short amount of time. It takes about the same time to make Nitrogen Gelato, but it feels like you get little less ice cream.
All in all, it is a bit overpriced especially when you have Gelato Messina just around the block. Ice cream tastes better at Gelato Messina, but it’s still fun to watch people rolling up ice cream right before you. Also, the walls are just too cute.
