A couple of months ago, Le Boy’s family friend and partner established a Vietnamese and Chinese street food joint on Hardware Lane. First and foremost, I have to let you know that everything at Hawker Boys is MSG free. The food  is home made and locally sourced while the wonton soup stock, simmered with love and care every night by the owner’s mother. Everything is done with a conscious effort not to add any MSG in it.

At night the place isn’t so busy, but it is located in the perfect spot for a lot of foot traffic around lunch time. Hardware lane is a popular area for city goers and people working in the city to stroll buy for a quick and easy lunch.

Egg noodles, chicken and prawn wontons, bok choy in a chicken broth

A simple clean broth with tasty wonton dumplings but a bit of sliced BBQ pork. The serving size is a little small but is otherwise very tasty.

Crispy fried tofu, pickled carrots, shredded lettuce, sauteed onions, cucumber, spring onion, coriander, fried shallots and Siracha mayo.

I ordered a combo meal with a tofu vermicelli bowl. It was so good. The pickled carrots and the Siracha mayo added a nice little twist to your typical vermicelli rice bowl.

Le Boy overall enjoyed the spicy chicken bun me, but did find the bread a little chewy even though the bread is delivered fresh daily in the mornings. Hawker Boys is working on finding ways to keep and serve the bread in a way that keeps it’s crispy and fresh all day.

All the bowl me options were quite similar except for the toppings and accompanying sauces they were served with. Servings were generally a little smaller than what you would expect if you were to order the variety of bowl me(s) on their own. However, it works perfectly as a combo meal.  Staff is friendly and the dining space is open and lovely. There’s even a shared table with power point sockets for you to charge your digital equipment if you choose to dine in.

NB: I have since gone back and they they have upsized the serving bowls. Portion sizes are a little larger and is certainly filling whether you order a combo meal or have the rice or vermicelli bowls on their own.
