Another flashback post. With┬áthe stress that comes with assignments and exams looming (and now passing). It seems that apart from online shopping, writing positive reviews on places I’ve been recently works well to lift my mood.A place that I’ve been meaning to write about is Neko Neko. One of few Japanese cafes in Melbourne that serves vegan ramen.

The cafe is small and seats roughly a dozen or so people only. If you weren’t intentionally looking for it, you’d easily miss it. It seems to be a trend these days with cafes around Melbourne. A hard to find hidden treasure.

Neko Neko is like a hidden Japanese treasure in the streets of Brunswick nestled just off the corner of Smith St and Gertrude St.

2016-07-27-neko-neko-3Vegan Ramen $19.00
House made vegan ramen noodle soup (full of vegetables and mushroom broth)

I really enjoyed this vegan ramen. I loved the thick chewy noodles, the generous serving of veggies, toppings and the rich and tasty broth. If there was anything I didn’t like, it was that there wasn’t enough broth. Some of the toppings were actually too salty and it overwhelmed the dish so a bit of tweaking here and there would make it even better. As it stands it’s a delicious bowl of ramen but a little too heavy to be eaten on a daily basis.

Raw vegan okonomiyaki served with miso eggplant macadamia nut sushi $18.00

The raw okonomiyaki in terms of flavour tastes pretty accurate to what you would expect from a traditional okonomiyaki. When I say taste, I mean the tonkatsu sauce and the vegetables it’s made of. It’s quite thick, dense and filling for something that looks quite small. A good plate to share, but not something I would order on my own.

Overall, it may seem that the prices are quite steep for casual meal but the time and effort taken into assembling all the little elements and details of the dish do make it well worth the price tag (for most people). Although their vegan ramen could improve in some ways, I still really enjoyed it. I would still come back to Neko Neko and try some of their other dishes when in the area.
